ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split the final home doubleheader of the regular season with Delaware Valley University on Friday afternoon. The Aggies took game one 12-9. The Knights walked off with a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
The Knights had 17 hits in the first game, led by
Emily Reid and
Christina Ludovico each with three.
Elizabeth Shire knocked in three runs.
Ashley Mazzeo started the game and went the first 4.1 innings. She allowed eight runs, just two earned, on seven six hits.
Emily DuPont pitched an inning and allowed four runs, one earned, on five hits.
Olivia Ammon went the final 1.2 innings and just allowed one hit.
In the first inning, the Aggies took advantage of some miscues and scored four unearned runs for an early lead. DelVal added two more unearned runs in the second for a 6-0 advantage.
In the home half of the second, Neumann scored four runs, including a two-run single by
Taylor Portzline. In the fourth, the Knights plated three runs, including a two-run double by Shire, to take a 7-6 edge. The Aggies took the lead right back with three runs in the top of the fifth. DelVal added three more runs in the top of the sixth for a 12-7 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Knights loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Neumann plated a run on a passed ball and added another run on an RBI single by Reid. That was as close as the Knights would get in game one for the 12-9 final.
In game two, Reid and Shire each added three more hits.
Courtney McKenna started the game in the circle and went 5.0 innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits in the no decision.
Ashlynne Scardino pitched the final two scoreless innings for the win.
The Knights struck first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the second.
Kristen Pagliaro knocked in Shire with a sacrifice fly.
Vanessa Bowen scored on an error.
The Aggies responded with three runs in the third to take a 3-2 lead. DelVal added a fourth run in the fifth.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Bowen hit a two-run single to tie the game at four. Bowen was at the plate in the seventh when the Knights took the walk-off win. Shire doubled with one out. DuPont came in the pinch run. Bowen hit the ball to second base and reached on an error. DuPont ended up at third on the fielding error. The freshman ended up scoring on a throwing error by the Aggies after they threw to third base to try and tag out DuPont, and the ball got away.
Neumann (11-23) heads into the final conference doubleheader tomorrow when it heads to Cabrini. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
