ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's tennis team has advanced to the Atlantic East Conference Championship game and will take on top-seeded Marymount University on Friday, April 28
th.
The second-seeded Knights finished the regular season with a 6-2 overall record, including a 4-1 mark in Atlantic East play. Neumann enters the championship riding a five-match winning streak after dispatching third-seeded Marywood University in Wednesday's semifinal match by a score of 6-3.
Daniel Bonowski and
Justin McCullen won in both of their matches for the Neumann in singles and doubles, while the Knights also received singles wins from
Vince Landis,
Anthony Carpinella and
Joe Troilo.
Neumann will hope for a different outcome than the last time they played Marymount, as the Saints took them down by a count of 8-1. The Knights lost all of their doubles matches and
Joe Troilo was the only winner for the team in singles that day.
The Knights have received excellent play all the way through their lineup this season. Bonowski has carried the team at first singles with a 3-3 record in conference play, while
Justin McCullen (4-2) and
Vince Landis (5-1) have played every match at second and third singles respectively.
Anthony Carpinella (2-3) and
Sean Flannery (1-2) have split time at fourth singles and figure to play at four and five singles in the postseason, while
Joe Troilo (5-0) is undefeated in conference play at fifth and sixth singles.
Neumann will look to win its first conference championship in men's tennis since the 2008 season on Friday. If the Knights win they will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament starting next week.
