ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split with Elizabethtown College on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. The Knights won game one 2-0 before falling 7-5 in the nightcap.
In game one,
Ashlynne Scardino pitched a complete game shutout in the circle. In 7.0 innings, the sophomore gave up five hits.
Neumann scored both of its runs in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. The first two Knights reached via walks and were sacrificed over to second and third. Neumann loaded the bases on another walk.
Emily Reid scored the first run on a wild pitch.
Aubrie Breisblatt then scored on a sacrifice by Scardino.
Elizabethtown had a few scoring chances, including a lead-off triple in the fifth, but could not cross home plate.
In game two, the Blue Jays' bats came alive with 17 hits.
Taylor Portzline had three hits herself and knocked in a pair.
Elizabeth Shire scored two runs.
Emily DuPont started the game and took the loss, going 3+ innings and allowing four runs on 11 hits.
Ashley Mazzeo went the next 1.2 innings and allowed three runs on five hits.
Olivia Ammon shutdown the Blue Jays offense over the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit.
After Elizabethtown scored in the top of the first, Portzline singled in Breisblatt to tie the game at one after one.
Bri Reim knocked in Shire in the second for a 2-1 Knights lead.
The Blue Jays scored three runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead.
The Knights got two runs back in the home half of the fifth.
Christina Ludovico led off with a walk and scored on a single by
Ashley Leicht. Leicht then scored on a single by Portzline for a 7-5 game.
In the bottom of the sixth, Ludovico singled to knock in Shire.
Vanessa Bowen tried to score from second for a one-run game but was thrown out at the plate. The Knights went down 1-2-3 in the seventh and the comeback attempt fell short.
Neumann (7-18) gets back into conference action on Saturday when it travels to Marymount University. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12:00 PM.
