ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Basketball team dropped a 73-54 decision to its Atlantic East Conference rivals Gwynedd Mercy University on Wednesday night.
Lauren Klieber led the way for the Knights with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Emily DuPont put up 15 points, four steals and four assists.
Terea Hunt finished with a 10-point game, along with nine rebounds of her own.
After an early Gwynedd Mercy bucket, the Knights went on a quick 5-0 run on the strength of a
Lindsay Holden field goal and three-pointer by Hunt. From there, the Griffins went on to score the next 11 points and finished the half on a 16-1 run for an 18-6 score after the first quarter.
The second started as a back-and-forth affair, but Gwynedd Mercy went on an 8-0 run, extending its lead to 31-15 with 4:03 left in the half. The Knights kept pace for the duration of the quarter and trailed by 15, 36-21, at the break.
In the late stages of the third quarter, the Knights were able to lower the deficit to single digits, thanks to three pointers by Klieber and DuPont, but that is as close as they would come as Gwynedd Mercy closed the quarter with a five-point run, giving them a 51-38 advantage heading into the fourth. In the final frame, the Griffins pulled away to complete the win.
Neumann (9-8, 2-2 Atlantic East) will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a home conference game against Centenary. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
