RADNOR, Pa. – The Neumann University fell in overtime, 67-65, at Cabrini University in an Atlantic East Conference matchup on Wednesday night.
Kyle Thompson led the Knights with 24 points and eight rebounds.
TJ Lewis tallied 11 points and nine boards.
Tony James and
Kyson Rawls each scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
The game came down to overtime, as the teams were knotted at 59 after 40 minutes of action. In overtime, neither team would score until James made a jumper with 2:24 on the clock. Cabrini answered with a three-pointer to take back the lead. Thompson tied the game at 64 in the final minute of the first OT. Again, the Cavaliers answered right back with a basket. James went to the line and made 1-of-2 with 27 seconds remaining.
The Knights had a chance for the go-ahead basket in the final seconds, but it didn't go. Cabrini added a free throw for a two-point game. On the inbound, the Knights turned it over, but before the buzzer sounded, the Cavaliers walked to give Neumann back the ball with 0.5 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, last week's magic didn't continue, and the Knights couldn't get a shot off and fell by two.
Neumann opened the game on an 8-2 run. Cabrini then went on a 7-1 run and the teams were knotted at nine. The Cavaliers held the lead for most of the rest of the half, leading by as many as six. With the score 28-22, the Knights ended the half with an 8-2 run to tie the game at 30. A three-pointer by Thompson pulled the teams even before heading into the break.
The Cavaliers came out of the locker room on fire and built a 15-point lead, 48-33, midway through the second. The Knights were not going away quietly and started to chip into the deficit. Down by nine, 57-48, with 3:03 on the clock, Neumann went on an 8-1 run, capped by a three-pointer by Thompson, to pull within two, 58-56, with 17 seconds on the clock. Cabrini went 1-for-2 from the line to increase its lead back to three with 16 seconds left in regulation. With the game on the line, Thompson hit a layup-and-one to tie the game at 59. The Cavalier had a look at the buzzer, but the shot didn't go, and the teams went into overtime.
Neumann (14-5, 4-2 Atlantic East) will head to Marywood next Wednesday to begin the second half of conference action. Action is slated to being at 8:00 PM.
