ASTON, Pa. – In the final non-conference game of the season, the Neumann University men's basketball team defeated Penn State Lehigh Valley 92-72 on Thursday evening.
Jalen Vaughns netted his 1,000
th career point with a basket at the 11:11 mark of the first half. The junior led the way with 32 points and 14 rebounds, including nine off the offensive boards.
TJ Lewis contributed 18 points while
Kyle Thompson scored 12.
Ryan Starr added eleven points while grabbing eight assists.
The teams traded baskets for the first 4:42 of the contest but, with the game tied up at 15, Lehigh Valley went on an 8-0 run for a 23-15 advantage. From there, the Knights took the lead, picking up 13 straight points to take the lead by five. In the middle of that run, at the 11:11 mark, Vaughns tossed in a short jumper for the 1,000th point of his collegiate career. Tied at 36 with 2:42 left in the half, the Knights scored the final five points of the period to take a 41-36 lead into the break.
Keyed by a strong 13-7 run over the first four minutes of the second, and finished off by a Starr three-pointer, the Knights took an 11-point lead, 54-43. Neumann pushed ahead further, helped by multiple three-pointers made by
Kyson Rawls and Thompson, taking the lead to 76-59 on the strength of a 17-9 run with 7:23 left in the game. From there, the Knights pulled away, scoring nine of the last 11 points, ballooning the lead to 20, their largest lead of the game.
Neumann (10-3) closes out non-conference action with a five-game winning streak. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they host Marywood to open conference beginning at 3:00 PM.
