ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team battled to a 77-68 win over Marywood University on Saturday afternoon to open Atlantic East Conference action.
Emily DuPont and
Lauren Klieber each netted 23 points in the game. DuPont also tallied four steals while Klieber grabbed eight boards.
Terea Hunt notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. The senior also dished out four assists.
The first quarter featured five lead changes as the teams went back and forth. The Pacers held the largest lead of five, 9-4, and had the advantage for most of the first 10 minutes. A three-pointer by DuPont put the Knights in the lead 16-15 with under two minutes on the clock. The teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter. Two free throws gave Marywood a 19-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
With 6:18 left in the second, and the teams tied at 26, the Knights netted the next eight points to take a 34-26 lead. Neumann took a 39-33 advantage into halftime.
The Knights built a 13 points advantage, 53-40, over the first seven minutes of the third quarter. The Pacers ended the quarter on an 8-2 run for a 57-50 score heading into the final 10 minutes.
Two minutes into the fourth quarter, Neumann built another 13-point lead, 63-50. Marywood answered with an 11-0 run to pull within two with 4:30 on the clock. With 1:28 left in regulation,
Lindsay Holden hit a three-pointer to extend the Knights lead to seven, 72-65. Back to a four-point game in the final 30 seconds, Neumann went 5-for-6 from the line to seal the win, 77-68.
Neumann (8-6, 1-0 Atlantic East) will head to Marymount on Wednesday evening to continue conference beginning at 6:00 PM.
