PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell 52-51 in a back-and-forth game at Manhattanville College on Sunday afternoon.
Jalen Vaughns led the Knights, netting 26 points while grabbing seven rebounds.
TJ Lewis added 12 points, including going 7-for-7 from the line.
Jarell Keel pulled down 10 boards.
The game came down the to the final 1:32 when two free throws by Lewis tied the game at 46, then put the Knights up 47-46. Vaughns then hit a layup for a three-point Neuman lead. After a Manhattanville basket, Lewis connected on another two free throws and a 51-47 lead with 36 seconds on the clock.
The Valiants hit a layup 10 seconds later. Down by two, Manhattanville hit a three-pointer with four seconds on the clock.
Kyle Thompson took a last second shot, but it didn't fall and Manhattanville took the one-point win, 52-51,
The game went back and forth for the entire 40 minutes, featuring 11 lead changes and 10 tied scores. Tied at 10, the Knights went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-12 lead. Manhattanville finished the first half on a 13-2 run for a 25-21 lead at the halftime.
Neither team could pull away in the second half, leafing to six ties and eight lead changes.
Neumann (0-2) will head to Hamilton next weekend to compete in the Hamilton Men's Basketball Invitational. The Knights will face Vermont State – Lyndon on Saturday beginning at 5:00 PM.
