Women’s Basketball Falls in Steel Club Classic Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Basketball team returned from the holiday break to take on Moravian University in the opening game of the Steel Club Classic. They ultimately fell by a final score of 52-43, ending a four-game win streak.
 
Moravian got off to a quick start with a 6-0 run but Neumann pulled back within one with a quick five point jaunt of their own. The Greyhounds reestablished control of the game, extending the lead to as high as seven, and ended the first quarter with a 15-10 advantage.
 
The Greyhounds, over the first three minutes of the second, jumped ahead by 10, on the strength of a quick 5-0 run. By the halfway point of the period, the deficit ballooned to 14. Both teams essentially traded buckets for the rest of the half and the Knights went into the locker room trailing 34-24.
 
The lead extended to 13 but with 7:22 left in the third, Neumann went on an 8 point stretch, closed by a Lindsay Holden three-pointer, pulling the Knights back within five. Over the last 80 seconds of the quarter, Neumann pulled to within three on the strength of four straight Bri Gautier free throws.
 
Throughout most of the final regulation quarter, the lead transitioned between one and five points. With 4:41 left, the Neumann trailing by two, the Greyhounds went on a seven point run to extend the lead to nine with 26 seconds left, to seal the game.
 
Lauren Klieber led the Knights' offensive attack with 12 points, tied for the game high. She also contributed eight rebounds, two assists, along with a steal, and a block. Emily DuPont had a seven point, seven rebound performance, while Jacqueline Wardrop came off of the bench for seven points of her own.
 
Neumann(9-4) will look to get back into the win column in the consolation game against either Capital University or Salisbury University. The opening tip on Saturday is scheduled for 11:00 AM and will be hosted by Moravian.
