GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 54-50 to sweep the season series on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic East Conference action.
Tony James led the Knights with a double-double, 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Ryan Starr hit three three-pointers and finished with 14 points.
TJ Lewis added 10 points, including going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
In the low scoring game, the teams had three tied scores in the first seven minutes. After being tied at eight, the Griffins went on a 12-5 run for a 20-13 score midway through the first half. Trailing 30-22 with 4:43 left in the first, the Knights finished the half on an 11-2 run. A three-pointer by Starr gave Neumann the lead and the Knights took a 33-32 edge into the locker room.
Coming out of halftime, the Griffins scored the first eight points for a 40-33 advantage. A three-pointer by Starr five minutes into the half finally put the Knights on the board in the second. A jumper by James with 9:40 on the clock tied the game at 42. The teams traded baskets over the next five minutes and were tied at 48 with 4:34 left in regulation. A layup by James, followed by a free throw by
Jalen Vaughns gave the Knights a three-point advantage. The Griffins pulled to within one, 51-50, with 1:47 remaining.
Neither team could find the basket as the clock continued to tick. With 13 second on the clock, Vaughns went 1-for-2 from the line for a two-point game. Gwynedd Mercy attempted to tie the game with a last second layup. James grabbed the rebound and was fouled just before the buzzer sounded. James went 2-for-2 from the line to seal the 54-50 win for the Knights.
Neumann (17-6, 7-3 Atlantic East) will host Cabrini on Wednesday in the final home game of the regular season. Tip-off slated for 8:00 PM.
