HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Neumann University men's basketball team won its regular season finale 80-64 at Centenary University on Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic East Conference contest.
Ryan Starr entered the game needing just four assists to set the single season record. He finished with seven assists, giving the senior 171 assists this season, breaking 167 set by Reggie Coleman, set in the 2013-14 season. The senior also added seven points and six rebounds.
Jalen Vaughns notched a double-double with 32 points and 15 rebounds.
TJ Lewis added 15 points.
Tony James tallied 11 points and nine boards.
Kyle Thompson also netted 11 points.
After trading baskets to start the game, Neumann took a 7-5 lead and went on a 12-2 run for a 19-9 lead. The Knights largest lead of the first half was 14, coming on a layup by James, assisted by Starr, giving the senior the single-season record. The Cyclones hit a three-pointer at the buzzer and the Knights took a 39-32 advantage into halftime.
Vaughns connected on the first basket of the second half. Centenary answered with the next 11 points to take a 43-41advantage. With 14:19 on the clock, the Cyclones built their largest lead of the game, 50-45. The Knights then went on a 14-0 run over the next four minutes for a 59-50 lead with 10:22 left in regulation. Neumann kept Centenary at arm's length for the rest of regulation, adding to its lead en route to the 80-64 final.
Neumann (19-6, 9-3 Atlantic East) will be the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic East playoffs. The Knights receive a bye in the first round and will host a semifinal contest on Wednesday, February 22.
