ASTON, Pa. – In an afternoon where the Neumann University Men's Ice Hockey team said goodbye to their three seniors, the Knights came away with a shootout win over the Wilkes University Colonels after the game ended in a 3-3 tie in a United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) match-up on Saturday.
The final game of the season for the Knights started off slow as it was Wilkes that would strike first on a power play goal at the 8:29 mark of the first period. Less than two minutes later, the Colonels doubled their advantage with an even strength goal. Neumann would cut the deficit in half just a minute and 16 seconds later on
Devin Joyce's second goal of the season.
Ben Gibbons and
Matt King grabbed assist on the goal.
After a scoreless second period,
Tyson Rohrer tied the game at two at the 4:42 mark of the third.
Dionne Demke and
Nate Dunning each picked up assists on Rohrer's third goal of the year. With five minutes left in regulation, the Colonels retook the lead at 3-2, but with the goaltender pulled for the extra attacker, Neumann tied the game again on
Tyler Inlow's first goal in a Knights sweater.
Chase Cochran and
Brady Mistler assisted on the goal that sent the game into overtime.
In spite of nine shots on goal combined between the two teams, neither could come up with the game-winner so the game went into a shootout. The three seniors, Joyce, Dunning, and Demke were chosen to shoot in the skills session, but none could score. Fortunately, Wilkes didn't score either. In the fourth round, it was
Luke Croucher who would finally throw one into the net for the two points in the standings.
Cole DeFazio made 19 saves in regulation and overtime and added four more saves in the shootout. Dunning hit the net with seven shots to lead the Knights. Demke and
Tyler Kulas was right behind him with four each. Dunning also had three blocked shots.
Neumann ends the season with a 6-18-1 overall record and were 4-15-1 in conference play. Although the Knights didn't qualify for the UCHC post-season tournament, they end the campaign on a high note, looking forward to 2023-24.
