CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Neumann University men's volleyball team battled in a five-set loss at Wilson College on Tuesday evening.
Veryl Burns led the Knights with 13 kills and eight blocks.
Manny Waugh added nine kills.
Christian Johnson handed out 23 assists.
Brandon Baskerville tallied 17 digs. Waugh notched 12 and
Isaiah Raye-Ryan added 10.
James Pollard notched five blocks.
In set one, the Phoenix took a 3-3 tie and tallied seven straight points for a 10-3 advantage. The Knights worked their way back and knotted the game at 13. Wilson answered by scoring nine of the next 10 points and then took the match 25-18.
In the second set, Neuman slowly built up its lead and won 25-16 on one of Burns' blocks. The Knights jumped out to an 11-8 lead in the third set. The Phoenix answered with six straight points to take the lead. Going back-and-forth, the teams knotted up at 19 on a kill by Waugh. Wilson took the next two points and then the teams traded points down the stretch. Without being able to get two consecutive points, Neumann fell 25-23.
Slowing building their lead again, the Knights took a 9-5 edge and scored nine of the next 10 points for an 18-6 advantage. A kill by Raye-Ryan gave Neumann the 25-16 win to force a fifth set.
The fifth set started out like the match, going back-and-forth. With the Knights leading 6-5, the Phoenix scored the next five points for 10-6 lead. Neumann was only able to tally two more points and Wilson hung on for the 15-8 set win and 3-2 match win.
Neumann (3-12) heads to Valley Forge on Tuesday beginning at 7:00 PM.
