Men’s Basketball Competes for Second Straight Atlantic East Championship

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball will compete for its second straight Atlantic East Championship on Saturday, February. 25.
 
The Knights are the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic East postseason after going 9-3 in conference action. Neumann will head to No. 1 seeded Marymount, who went 10-2 in Atlantic East action. This is a rematch from the 2022 Championship where the Knights defeated the Saints 61-59.
 
Neumann and Marymount split during the regular season, with each team winning on its home court. At Marymount in January, the Saints came away with an 82-77 win. Jalen Vaughns led the Knights with 29 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Kyle Thompson netted 12 points and Tony James added 10.
 
Back at the Mirenda Center, the Knights hit a last second free throw for a 63-62 win over the Saints. Vaughns notched a double-double with 28 points and 13 rebounds. James tallied eight points. Justin Smith grabbed nine boards.  Ryan Starr handed out eight assists.
 
In semifinal action on Wednesday, Neumann defeated Gwynedd Mercy 71-52. TJ Lewis led the Knights with 20 points and Thompson netted 17. Lewis and Thompson netted seven three-pointers combined. Vaughns tallied another double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 points. Starr handed out nine assists, scored eight points and grabbed six rebounds.
 
For the season, Vaughns leads Neumann, averaging 23.2 points and 10.3 rebounds. The junior has tallied 15 double-doubles in 23 contests and scored his 1,000th point earlier in the year. Lewis is tallying 12.7 points per game while James adds 10.7. Thompson added 10.0 points off the bench and Starr averages 9.2.
 
Starr also set the season record for assists, held by Reggie Coleman in 2013-14 season. The senior currently has 180, breaking 167 set by Coleman.
 
Marymount defeated Immaculata 81-73 in its semifinal game on Wednesday. The winner on Saturday will be the 2022-23 Atlantic East Champion and will receive the conferences AQ to the NCAA Tournament.
