Men’s Basketball Falls Just Short in Championship

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University men's basketball team fell in the 2022-23 Atlantic East Basketball Championship game at Marymount University 57-52 on Saturday afternoon.

Ryan Starr led the Knights with 17 points and six rebounds. Jalen Vaughns and Tony James each tallied double-doubles with 13 points and 16 rebounds for Vaughns and 11 points and 12 boards for James.

The teams remained close throughout the entire 40 minutes. Except for two tied scores in the first half, the Knights held an edge, the largest lead being just five a handful of times. Neumann took a 27-24 advantage into halftime.

The second half was much of the same. There were five times the score was knotted, the last coming with just 1:05 on the lock and the teams tied at 50. A free throw by the Saints put them in the lead, 51-50 heading into the final minute of regulation. The Knights had a few shots at the basket but could not get the ball to fall. With 52 second on the clock. Marymount was back at the line and went 2-for-2 for a 53-50 lead.

Starr answered with a layup to bring Neumann back to within one with 36 seconds on the clock. The Knights fouled and the Saints again went 2-for-2 from the line for a three-point advantage. Neumann took a look at a three-pointer, but it didn't go, and Marymount got the rebound and was fouled. Going 2-for-2 at the line again put away the game for the 57-52 final.

Neumann is currently 20-7 and will wait for postseason announcements on Monday to see if the season will continue.
