WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Neumann University softball team split a pair of games on day two of the Spring Games on Sunday. The Knights fell to Adrian College 13-2 before defeating Chatham University 8-7.
Against the Bulldogs,
Olivia Ammon hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning to spoil the shutout and plate the first runs for the Knights this season.
Ang Sannicandro made her debut in the circle and went the first two innings. She allowed six runs, just one earned, on seven hits.
Courtney McKenna pitched the third and fourth innings.
Adrian didn't waste any time, scoring six runs in the first and third innings. Ammon hit her homerun with
Taylor Portzline on base.
In the second game, Ammon got her first win of the season. The sophomore pitched a complete game, allowing seven unearned runs on nine hits. Ammon put the Knights on the board in the first with a single to score
Christina Ludovico. With two runners on base,
Nicole Anderson tallied her first hit as a Knights, a triple, to score
Maddie Tice and Ammon. Anderson scored on a double by
Ashley Leicht and Neumann held a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
Neumann added another run in the second has Ludovico walked and scored on a double by
Kristen Pagliaro. The Knights added a pair in the fourth as Pagliaro again knocked in Ludovico with another double. Pagliaro came around to score on an error for a 7-0 Neumann lead.
The Cougars took advantage of an error and plated three runs in the top of the fifth. The Knights also scored an unearned run in the fifth for an 8-3 game.
In the top of the seventh, Chatham loaded the bases with no outs. With two outs, the Cougars hit a grand slam to get back to within one, 8-7. Ammon buckled down and got the last batter to line out to end the game.
Neumann (1-3) will play two more games tomorrow, beginning with the Milwaukee School of Engineering at 2:00 PM, followed by Eastern at 4:30 PM.
