WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Neumann University dropped a couple of games in Florida on Monday. The Knights fell 3-2 to Milwaukee School of Engineering before dropping a 12-0 decision to Eastern University.
Emily Ammon led off the first game against MSOE with a single through the right side of the infield and promptly stole second. Both her hit and stolen base were the first of her collegiate career.
Cioni Simmons advanced Ammon to third on first her first collegiate hit. Simmons stole second, also her first as a Knight. Ammon scored on a sacrifice fly by
Elizabeth Shire for a 1-0 Knights lead. In the bottom of the second, the Raiders tied the game on an RBI infield single and then took a 2-1 lead on a sacrifice fly.
Simmons started off with top of the fifth with a single and stole second. Shire walked and both runners moved up on a
Taylor Portzline sacrifice bunt.
Maddie Tice followed with an RBI groundout to score Simmons and tie the game at two. The Raiders took the lead for good on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth.
Simmons finished 3-for-4 with a walk, two stolen bases, and run scored to pace the offense.
Ashlynne Scardino was solid in the circle, giving up all three runs but only one was earned. In six innings, she allowed five hits and a walk while fanning three.
Against Eastern, the Eagles struck three times in the first inning on two RBI singles and an RBI double. Eastern put together another run in the second on an RBI single for a 4-0 advantage. The Eagles pushed their lead to six on a groundout and bases loaded walk in the third inning. Eastern continued the offense with six more runs in the fourth, on four RBI hits and an error to close out the scoring.
Neumann (1-5) will continue its spring break trip tomorrow with two more non-conference match-ups in Winter Haven, Fla. At 9:00 AM, the Knights take on Calvin University, and will battle Moravian University at 2:00 PM.
