MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Neumann University Baseball team used four multi-run innings to earn a 10-1 win over the Eastern University Eagles on Tuesday afternoon.
Eastern got the scoring started in the first inning with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. After a scoreless second, Neumann took over in the third. With one away,
Tyler Kilmer and
Nick Glebocki reached on back-to-back walks.
Brandon Colon drove them both in on an RBI single through the right side for a 2-1 Knights lead.
In the fourth, with one out,
Isaiah Payton was hit by a pitch.
Thomas Elgrim's single moved Payton to second then
Alec Silverman drove him in with an RBI single. Two batters later, on a double steal, Elgrim scored from second on a throwing error and Neumann led by three.
Shawn Vega started off the fifth with a base hit and then stole second.
Ryan Lopez smashed a triple and Vega came in to score.
Andrew Curran then brought in Lopez on a single to make it a 6-1 game.
In the eighth, Payton led off with a double. After a groundout, Silverman picked up another RBI single, driving in Payton to extend the lead. Neumann saved the best for the last inning as they put together a three run ninth. With one out,
AJ Nardo reached on an error then stole second.
Morgan D'Amico followed with a pinch-hit RBI double to drive in Nardo. Payton and Elgrim would follow with walks to load the bases. Silverman would also walk to bring home Payton.
Jonathan Baker then singled in Elgrim to close out the onslaught.
Silverman finished up 2 for 4 with a walk, a stolen base, and three runs batted in. Lopez was 2 for 4 with a triple, an RBI, and a run scored.
Zach Mullins improved to 1-0 with a six inning start, allowing just the one earned run on six hits, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch, while striking out five. The bullpen combination of
JerVal Shuler,
Chris Balshuweit, and
Jack Valentine, spread out four hits over the last three scoreless innings to close out the game. All four pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.
Neumann (1-3) is scheduled to be back in action on Friday when they play a doubleheader against St. Joseph's University of Long Island. First pitch for game one is slated for 10am.
