ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team fell in the final seconds to Marymount University 46-44 on Wednesday evening in Atlantic East Conference action.
Lauren Klieber led the Knights with 20 points and seven rebounds.
Emily DuPont added seven points and seven boards.
The game came down to the final minute of play as the teams were knotted at 44 with 1:07 on the clock. Neither team could find the basket until two free throws by the Saints with three second on the clock. That was the difference as the Knights could not get a shot to fall before the buzzer.
Neumann opened the game strong, building a 9-2 lead over the first six minutes. Marymount chipped into the deficit and pulled within two, 14-12, at the end of the first quarter.
DuPont opened the second quarter with a three-pointer for a 17-12 advantage. The Saints netted the next six points to take an 18-17 edge. A jumper by
Lindsay Holden with 2:31 on the clock put the Knights back up 21-20. Holden went 2-for-2 from the line with 2:05 left in the half for a 23-20 score, which would be taken into halftime.
The teams stayed neck-and-neck in the third quarter with four tied scores. Tied at 31 with 1:12 left in the quarter, Marymount scored the final four points of the quarter for a 35-31 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Free throws by Klieber with 6:03 on the clock gave Neumann a 40-39 lead. A layup by
Terea Hunt put the Knights up 44-39 with three minutes remaining in regulation. A minute later, Marymount hit a layup for a three-point game. With just over a minute left, the Saints connected on a three-pointer to pull even at 44.
Neumann (12-10, 5-4 Atlantic East) heads to Gwynedd Mercy on Saturday in the final push before the postseason. Action is slated to get underway at 1:00 PM.
