LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Neumann University men's volleyball team fell in a battle at Cairn University, 3-0, on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-13, 25-21 and 25-22.
Veryl Burns led the Knights with eight kills.
Christian Johnson handed out 13 assists.
Brandon Baskerville tallied 15 digs.
In the second set, Cairn scored the first point before Neumann was able to net the next four, including three kills. The teams battled back and forth. When the Knights took a 9-7 lead, the Highlanders answered with the next seven points to take a 14-9 advantage. Neumann pulled back within two a couple times, including 18-16. Cairn scored five straight points, but then the Knights answered with their own five points, capped on a service ace by Johnson, for a 23-21 score. The Highlanders tallied the next two points to take the set.
The third set started back and forth. Down 11-6, Neumann six of the next seven points to pull even at 12 on block assists by Burns and Johnson. Cairn answered by scoring seven of the next eight points. The Knights were not going quietly and pulled back to within two, 23-21. At match point, Burns notched one of his kills for a 24-22 score. The Highlanders finished the match with a kill.
Neumann (1-7) heads to Hood College on Saturday for a tri-match. The Knights will face the Blazers at 10:00 AM, followed by Valley Forge at 12:00 PM.
