ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball were dealt a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Stockton University Ospreys in non-conference play. The scores were 7-0 and 6-2.
After a scoreless first inning of the first game, Stockton got on the board in the second, first with a solo home run. The attack continued with an RBI infield single, a throwing error on a stolen base, anther RBI base hit, and a run-scoring fielder's choice, and after two innings of play, the Ospreys led 5-0. Neumann struggled to get their offense rolling and Stockton added some insurance in the sixth. One run on a dropped pop fly, and another on a groundout.
Ashlynne Scardino was dealt the loss, going the full seven innings but only being charged with three earned runs, while striking out two. Her record falls to 2-4.
Kristen Pagliaro reached base twice as she went 1 for 2 with a double, and a walk.
Game two started similarly to the opener with the scoring waiting until the second frame, but this time, it was the Knights who would strike.
Elizabeth Shire, with one away, doubled over the head of the centerfielder. Two batters,
Maddie Tice drove her in with a single, and Neumann had an early 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Pagliaro led off with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. With two out,
Erin Grogan singled in Pagliaro to double the advantage for the Knights. Stockton responded in the fifth on an RBI single and RBI double to tie the game at two. In the sixth, they took the lead using an RBI ground out, then pulled away in the seventh with a three-run home run, to seal the sweep.
Cecelia Mick ended up 2 for 3 and Pagliaro again reached twice, going 1 for 2 with a walk and a run scored.
Olivia Ammon pitched a complete game but suffered the loss to drop to 3-4 on the year.
Neumann (5-12) will be back in action on Thursday when they host FDU- Florham in another non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one at Bruder Field is scheduled for 3pm.
