ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's volleyball team dropped a five-setter to Hood College in the season finale on Tuesday evening.
Veryl Burns led the Knights with 17 kills and a .519 hitting percentage.
TJ McConnell added 12 kills.
Gianni Smith handed out 28 assists.
Brandon Baskerville tallied 18 digs.
Neumann opened the match by taking the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-14. In the second set, the Knights held a 15-12 lead and scored nine straight points to get to set point, 24-12.
Hood opened set three by taking a 7-2 lead. The Knights came back and knotted the score at 12 on a kill by
James Pollard. The teams battled back and forth. Down 23-20, Neumann rattled off four points, capped by a service ace by Pollard, to get with set point, 24-23. The Blazers were not going quietly and notched two kills. Hood forced fourth set with a 28-26 set three win.
The Blazers took a 6-6 score in the fourth set and jumped out to a 12-6 advantage. The teams traded points back and forth and Hood forced a fifth with a 20-5 fourth set win.
Hood held an 8-4 lead as the team's switched sides in the fifth set. Down 12-8, the Knights scored fourth points and tied the set at 12 on a service ace by
Isaiah Raye-Ryan. Another service ace by Burns tied the set again at 13 and a Blazers attack error put the Knights at match point, 14-13. Again, Hood didn't go quietly, and a kill tied the set at 14 and a service ace put the Blazers up 15-14. Hood came away with the 16-14 fifth set win to take the match 3-2.
Neumann finishes the season 6-16.
