ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team, after several postponements, finally completed their three-game Atlantic East Conference set against the Cabrini University Cavaliers on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights were defeated by a final score of 18-6.
Brandon Colon and
Andrew Curran led the offense, both going 2 for 4 at the plate. Curran added a home run, a double, two runs batted in, and a run scored.
Gabriel Colon got the start and was dealt the loss to drop his record to 1-1.
Cabrini got the high-scoring affair rolling with a solo home run in the top of the first inning. Neumann responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame.
Brandon Colon led off with a single and, two batters later,
Shawn Vega,
Ryan Lopez, and
Isaiah Payton all walked, tying the game at one.
The Cavaliers pulled away with a big second inning as they scored 11 runs while sending 15 men to the plate. The runs came on four run-scoring singles, and three run-scoring doubles.
In the bottom of the inning, the Knights started to chip away at the deficit.
Thomas Elgrim was hit by a pitch and
Nick Glebocki singled. After both runners moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch,
Tyler Kilmer grounded out to drive in a run. Vega walked and as he attempted to steal second, Glebocki scored on a throwing error. Lopez walked once again and Vega stole third, setting up a Payton RBI single, pulling Neumann within eight.
Both teams went scoreless until the fifth when Cabrini picked up an RBI sacrifice fly for a 13-4 lead. Lopez led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and then Curran rocketed a two-run homer over the left-centerfield wall for his second of the season. The Cavaliers got both runs back in the sixth on a two-run single and added another on a solo home run in the seventh. They would add two more in the ninth on a two-run blast.
Neumann (6-12, 0-3 Atlantic East) will return to action tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference tilt against Albright College. The match-up at Bruder Field against the Lions is scheduled for a 3:30 PM start.
