Men’s Basketball Finishes Season in ECAC Semifinals

ALFRED, N.Y. – The Neumann University men's basketball teams season came to an end in the ECAC Semifinals on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 1 seeded Alvernia University 73-68.
 
Jalen Vaughns netted 32 points in the game. The junior also grabbed nine rebounds. Ryan Starr tallied 19 points and 14 rebounds while handing out seven assists. Justin Smith finished with 10 boards and five points. Tony James dished out five helpers to go with his six points.
 
A layup by TJ Lewis gave the Knights an early 4-3 lead and started six straight points for Neumann. Leading 10-9 the Knights went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 21-11 advantage midway through the first. Neumann's largest lead came 1:47 before halftime on a Ja'bri White jumper, 13 points, 37-24. Alvernia scored the final five points of the half and Neumann took a 37-29 lead into the break.
 
Vaughns netted the first basket of the second for a 39-29 lead, before the Golden Wolves went on a 13-2 run to take a 42-41 edge. The teams traded baskets over the next couple minutes and were tied at 49 with 11:34 on the clock. Alvernia went on a 9-2 run to take a 58-51 lead.
 
With Alvernia leading 66-57 with 7:45 on the clock, Neumann went on a 10-0 and took a 67-66 edge with 1:30 left in regulation on a free throw by Starr. The Golden Wolves connected on a layup to take the lead right back. After a Knights turnover, Alvernia hit its 15th three-pointer of the game for a 71-67 lead with 34 seconds. The game ended with free throws and the Golden Wolves holding on for the 73-68 win.
 
Neumann finishes its season 21-8. Vaughns was named to the ECAC DIII Men's Basketball All-Tournament Team for his performance.
