ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon with Marymount University.
The Saints took game one 5-4 in nine innings while the Knights won game two in walk-off fashion , 4-3.
Prior to the game, Neumann honored its four seniors:
Kat Collins,
Erin Grogan,
Christina Ludovico and
Ashley Mazzeo.
Mazzeo started game one and went 5.0 innings in the no decision. She allowed three runs, one earned.
Ashlynne Scardino went the next 4.0 innings and allowed two unearned runs.
Marymount struck in the top of the first inning with two unearned runs. Neumann answered right back and scored two.
Emily Ammon singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kristen Pagliaro.
Cioni Simmons then scored on an RBI groundout by
Elizabeth Shire.
The Knights took a 4-2 lead in the third. Simmons came around to score after singling to lead off the inning. Pagliaro walked and scored on a fielders choice. The Saints tied the game with two runs in the top of the sixth.
The Saints plated an unearned run in the top of the ninth to take game one in extra innings.
Game two remained scoreless until the top of the fourth when Marymount plated three runs. Neumann answered in the home half of the fourth as Shire singled and came around to score on a double by
Maddie Tice. Tice scored in an error for a 3-2 game.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Ashley Leicht led off with a pinch-hit single.
Alyssa Celi followed with another pinch-hit single. With one out, Simmons hit a fielders choice to load the bases.
Emily DuPont, who came back in for Leicht, scored on a fielders choice by Pagliaro.
Taylor Portzline then drew a bases-loaded walk for the 4-3 walk-off win.
Olivia Ammon threw the complete game for the win. In 7.0 innings she allowed three runs on five hits and struck out six.
Neumann (12-21, 5-5 Atlantic East) heads to Rutgers-Camden for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 3:00 PM.
