Women’s Basketball Upended by Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University Women's Basketball team dropped an Atlantic East Conference match-up on Wednesday night against Marymount University by a final score of 61-50.

The Saints got out to a hot start by scoring the first eight points over the first three minutes. In all, the Knights were outscored 18-6 heading into the second quarter. The start of the second was back-and-forth but Marymount were able to extend the lead to 12. At the 4:44 mark, the Saints went on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to push their lead to 18. Although Neumann sank two three-pointers to close the half, they still trailed by 13 at the break.

Little changed after the intermission as Marymount opened the third with a 13-2 stretch, giving them a 24 point edge. That seemed to wake up the Knights as the attempted to claw back into the game with a 12-4 run over the last 3:32 of the quarter. They continued to come back by scoring the first nine points of the fourth, closed by an Emily DuPont layup, and Neumann was right back in the game, down by seven with 5:55 left. Unfortunately for the Knights, that's as close as they would come.

DuPont led the offensive effort with 20 points along with a team-high six rebounds. Bri Gautier came off the bench and contributed eight points while Aubrie Breisblatt and Lauren Klieber each added seven. One bright spot for the Knights was their 88.9% success rate from the free throw line.

Neumann (13-7, 2-3 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Saturday when they host another conference rival in Gwynedd Mercy University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 PM at the Mirenda Center.
