ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University Women's Basketball team had their postseason run come to a close as they dropped a 3-0 decision against Marymount University on Saturday afternoon.
Neumann got off to a fast start by taking a 4-0 lead. Marymount followed with two straight points, but the Knights grabbed four of the next five points for an 8-3 lead. The Saints responded with a run to get the back within three, but with the score at 10-7, Neumann went four straight for extended the advantage to seven. From there, Marymount took over by scoring 11 points in a row, and 18 of the next 19 points to take a commanding lead, closing out the set 25-16.
The second set started back and forth but the Saints found themselves up, 9-5. The Knights powered back to take 9 of the next 11 points to take a 14-11 lead. The squads traded three point runs but with the set at 17-14, Marymount earned eight of the next ten points to take a three-point lead. Despite pulling within one, the Saints won the last three points to win the set, 25-21.
Marymount came out strong in the third by winning the first five points. Neumann got back within one at 7-6, and again at 12-11. The Saints took over from there with a four-point stretch. Neumann would score a point and Marymount would score two. That trend continued until the end of the match, as the Saints clinched the title with a 25-17 final set.
Nayeli Cruz led the Knights with seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage.
Melissa Eddy added six kills, and
Taylor Long had four.
Dani Smith had 20 assists to give her 1,001 on the season and led Neumann with nine digs. She also added one service ace giving her 228 in her career, tying her for the most in a career in Neumann program history.
Neumann (13-19) ends their 2024 season but with a large group of returnees, they look to take the next step in 2025.
