ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team, in an offensive battle, defeated Eastern University in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 23-13.
Eastern got on the board in the first inning with an RBI single and an RBI double for an early lead.
Thomas Elgrim led off the second with a double off of the left field wall. After he moved to third on a balk,
Marcus White smashed a deep fly over the scoreboard in left for a two-run home run, tying the game at two. After
Colton Shaub reached on a fielder's choice,
Nick Glebocki walked, and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. A second wild pitch allowed Shaub to score, giving the Knights the lead.
In the third,
Joe Boccio led off with a walk and
Isaiah Payton followed by getting hit by a pitch. Elgrim followed with an RBI single that dropped in the left field, scoring Boccio and moving Payton to second. Two batters after a pitching change, Finger loaded the bases with an infield hit. With two outs, Shaub was issued a bases-loaded walk, scoring Payton. Glebocki followed and rocketed a grand slam over the left-centerfield wall, giving Neumann a 9-2 lead.
Eastern responded in the bottom of the inning, starting with a solo home run on the first pitch. Later in the frame, they added a two-run homer to pull within four. In the fourth, The Eagles continued to claw at the lead, scoring four runs on three straight hits, two singles and a double, tying the game at nine.
Neumann got right back to it the very next inning when White led off with a walk and moved to second two batters later when
Matt Mason was hit by a pitch. Two batters after that, Glebocki picked up another RBI with a single into right, scoring White, and giving the Knights a 10-9 advantage. Eastern came right back in the bottom of the inning tying the game on an error. They then took the lead on a sacrifice fly.
The bats kept busy in the sixth as Boccio singled to left to lead off the inning and moved to third on a Payton double. Elgrim hit an RBI single into left, scoring Boccio to draw the game even once again. Two batters later, Finger walked. After an strikeout, Shaub with a two-run base hit into right field and Glebocki hit an RBI single through the left side of the infield, reestablishing the lead for the Knights.
The Eagles got back on the board on a throwing error and a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. In the seventh, Boccio, Payton, and Elgrim each walked to load the bases. After a pitching change, Finger walked to drive in Boccio and then Payton scored on a wild pitch. Shaub followed with a hit by pitch and Glebocki was walked to drive in Elgrim.
Brandon Colon broke the game back open with a bases-clearing doubl. Boccio came up for the second time in the frame and belted a two-run homer into the trees, and after a Payton double, Elgrim drive him in with a base hit for a 10 run advantage.
Glebocki had a monster day, reaching in all seven plate appearances. He was 4 for 4 with three walks, a home run, two stolen bases, seven runs batted in, and two runs scored. Elgrim was 4 for 5 with a double, a walk, three RBI, and four runs scored. Boccio was 2 for 5 with a homer, two walks, two RBI, and four runs scored. Payton also scored four runs while adding two doubles.
Nick Colon earned the win in relief as
Michael Whitmore closed the game, hurling the last two scoreless innings.
Neumann(6-3) returns to action on Saturday when they host Manhattanville College in a non-conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for a 12:00 PM start, with game two started 30 minutes after the completion of game one.
