HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The Neumann University Softball team dropped their first two Atlantic East Conference games in heartbreak fashion, falling in game one, 6-5 in eight innings, and in game two, 3-2 in 10 innings.
Game one started with
Cioni Simmons reaching on a one out walk. She immediately stole second then moved to third on a
Kristen Pagliaro single. After Pagliaro stole second,
Taylor Portzline knocked a base hit to left, driving in two, and gave the Knights early lead. Centenary responded in the bottom of the first on a solo homer.
In the top of the second, with one away,
Alexis Palombi hit a triple and then scored on a passed ball. The Cyclones tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a two-run double. After a scoreless third,
Tori Spinella led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a
Cecelia Mick RBI double. Again, Centenary equalized as they picked up a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame.
With one out in the sixth, Palombi reached first on an error.
Emily Ammon drove her to third with her own hit, and then Palombi scored on a passed ball for a 5-4 lead. Centenary tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single and then walked it off with another RBI base hit in the eighth.
Portzline was 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBI to lead the Knights' attack. Palombi scored a couple of runs, going 1 for 4 with a triple.
Ang Sannicandro was handed the loss in relief after giving up the winner in the eighth on just one hit and a walk. She struck out two.
Game two started a little slower with the first two innings going scoreless. Centenary broke through in the third with a RBI double for a 1-0 lead. Simmons led off the fourth with a single to left and moved to second on a Pagliaro single. Portzline followed with a sacrifice bunt, moving the runner up a base and then Simmons scored on a dropped pop fly by
Maddie Tice.
The Knights picked up the lead in the fifth when, with one out, Spinella singled into left and advanced to second on a fly ball. Palombi drove her in with an RBI single to make it a 2-1 game. In the sixth, the Cyclones tied the game with an RBI single, again forcing extra innings.
Neumann's best chance of scoring came in the ninth when they loaded the bases with one away, but they couldn't find that final hit. In the bottom of the 10
th, a sacrifice fly gave Centenary the win and the sweep of the doubleheader.
Spinella went 2 for 4 with a run scored to lead the charge while
Daphne Santos had a strong day in the circle. She went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on four hits and three walks, while fanning one.
Sydney Wright suffered the loss giving up an unearned run in the final inning.
Neumann (4-10, 0-2 Atlantic East) will return to action on Tuesday when they open the home portion of their schedule against Penn State Abington in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one will be at 3:00 PM.
