ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University softball team traveled to Marymount University for an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon, falling in both games 8-5 and 3-2 in 8 innings.
Game one went back and forth. The Saints jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. The Knights got one run back in the fourth as
Cecelia Mick knocked in
Taylor Portzline.
Neumann plated four runs in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. After the first three batters reached,
Kristen Pagliaro doubled to knock in two.
Alyssa Celi hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at four. With two outs,
Tori Spinella drew a bases loaded walk to score Pagliaro and put the Knights up 5-4.
The Saints answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, including a three-run homerun, for an 8-5 score.
Ashlynne Scardino started in the circle and went 1.2 innings, allowing four runs.
Sydney Wright took the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing four runs and striking out three.
In game two, each team plated a run in the fourth inning.
Elizabeth Shire walked to open the inning and advanced to third on an error when
Nicole Anderson reached on a fielders choice. Shire scored on an RBI groundout by Spinella. The Saints answered with a run in the bottom of the inning.
The Knights took back the lead in the fifth when Portzline hit an RBI single to score
Cioni Simmons. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Marymount tied the game at two and sent game to extra innings.
Neumann put two runners on in the top of the eighth but could not push a run across. With two outs, the Saints scored the game-winning run on a single.
Olivia Ammon pitched a complete game, taking the loss.
Neumann (6-14, 0-4 Atlantic East) welcomes Swarthmore on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
