Baseball Splits with Cyclones to Pick Up First Conference Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team split a doubleheader with Centenary University on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic East Conference action. The Cyclones won the first game 5-4 while the Knights won 14-11 in game two.
 
The Cyclones picked up an unearned run in the first for an early lead in game one. In the fourth, the Knights plated two runs as they took advantage of an error. Joe Boccio knocked in two more in the fifth for a 4-1 Neumann lead.
 
Centenary was not going to go quietly and put together four runs on five hits in the top od the seventh to take a 5-4 lead. Neumann put two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh but could not get the tying run across and fell 5-4.
 
Aidan Jackson started the game and took the loss. He went 6.2 innings and allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits and struck out three. Jack Valentine got the final out in the seventh.
 
The bats came alive in game two as the teams combined for 33 hits and 25 runs.
 
The Cyclones started quickly with three runs in the top of the first. The Knights got one run back in the bottom half as Matt Mason scored on a single by Andrew Curran. In the second, Mason tripled to score two and tie the game at three. Mason then scored on a single by Colton Shaub for a 4-3 lead.
 
Centenary answered right back with five runs in the third. Neumann scored three runs in the home half to pull back within one, 8-7, after three innings. The teams went back and forth until the bottom of the seventh when the Knights took advantage of two Cyclones errors to plate three runs and take a 12-11 lead.
 
The Knights added two insurance runs in the eighth one a double by Curran and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch by Donovan Brooks. Centenary put a runner on base in the top of the ninth but could not get anything else going and Neumann came away with the 14-11 win.
 
Anthony Rakotz had four hits and two RBI in the game. Curran finished with three hits. Nick Colon started the game and went 3.0 innings in the no decision. Vic Mejia got his first win of the season, going 4.0 innings. Gatlin Hovenstine went 2.0 innings and got the save.
 
Neumann (10-12, 1-7 Atlantic East) will host Cairn on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 3:30 PM.
