ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Soccer team took down Penn State Abington on Friday afternoon at the Turf Field, grabbing the victory in the non-conference match by a final score of 2-1.
The Knights controlled much of the early going, earning some early opportunities, but the first huge chance was a Nittany Lions breakaway that was thwarted by the defensive work of
Cara Cimo. Neumann finally got on the board when newcomer,
Julianna Hatt drove a shot from 25 yards out to the far side corner, tipping off the goalkeeper's fingertips, for a 1-0 lead, that they took to the halftime break.
Penn State Abington took command in the early stages of the second and, in the 78
th minute, they were able to sneak an outside shot in to equalize the game. In the dying stages of the game, Neumann stepped up the pressure with multiple chances on the frame. In the 88
th minute, Hatt volleyed a
Marisa Nicolucci pass off the post, and in the goal to clinch the opening day victory.
Morghan Stiles led the Knights with three shots, including two on goal. Nicolucci and
Summer Brown also attempted three shots, with Brown getting two on frame.
Lex Navarro picked up the win in goal with four saves.
Neumann(1-0) will return to action on Sunday, September 1
st for their first road match as they visit Bryn Mawr College. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 PM start.
