ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team split a pair of matches on day two of the Knights Invitational on Saturday. The Knights defeated Cedat Crest College 3-0 to open the day before falling to Rowan University 3-0.
Against the Falcons,
Julia Solomon tallied 11 kills.
Dani Smith handed out 30 assists and six service aces.
Hannah Strohm notched 15 digs and
Kyla Sayson added 14.
The Knights opened the match by taking the first six points. Neumann took set one 25-13. The teams went back and forth in set two. With Cedar Crest leading 18-17, Neumann scored six straight points for a 23-18 advantage. The Falcons pulled back to within two, 21-23. The Knights netted the next two points, capped by a service aces by Smith and the 25-21 win.
Set three remained close throughout. The Falcons held a late 23-20 lead. The Knights scored the next four points for a 24-23 advantage. Continuing going back and forth, a kill by
Nayeli Cruz tied the score at 26. A service aces by Sayson another Cruz kill gave Neumann the 28-26 set three and 3-0 match win.
Against the Profs,
Melissa Eddy tallied 10 kills. Smith dished out 26 assists and 17 digs. Strohm notched 15 kills,
Emma Dobberstein had 13 and Sayson added 11.
Rowan jumped out to an early 10-2 lead. The Knights chipped their way back in and tied the set at 14 on a service aces by Smith. The teams traded points down the stretch, but Rowan scored four of the final five points for a 25-21 set one win. Set two was much like set one, with the Profs pulling away late 25-19.
Set three was do different. Down 21-18, the Knights scored five straight points for a 23-21 edge. Neumann got to set point, 24-22, on a kill by Solomon, but Rowan answered with the next four points for a 26-24 third set win and 3-0 match win.
Smith was named to the All-Tournament team.
Neumann (4-6) will host St. Mary's on Thursday evening beginning at 7:00 PM.
