IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Neumann University field hockey team wrapped up the regular season with a 1-0 win at Immaculata University on Wednesday evening in Atlantic East Conference action. With the win, the Knights clinch the No. 2 seed in the conference postseason.
The Knights scored the lone goal of the game on a penalty corner in the 27
th minute. On the corner,
Ayla Mergen inbounded the ball to
Natalia Thomas who sent a bullet towards the net.
Cadence Conti tipped the ball into the back of the cage for the 1-0 score.
The Mighty Macs held the pace in the first quarter as they had four shots, one on net. The Knights got their first two shots on net to open the second quarter. As the clock was winding down, Neumann capitalized on the penalty corner for the 1-0 lead.
The defense stepped up in the third quarter with just three shots between the two teams and no goals. The Mighty Macs put the pressure on to start the fourth quarter and had two early penalty corners and two shots off the corners. In the 49
th minute, Immaculata had three penalty corners, but could not convert as Neumann blocked two shots and another shot went wide.
The Knights had a penalty corner late in the quarter, but the shot went wide.
Jess Silver's shot late in the game was turned aside as Neumann looked for the insurance goal.
Neumann (10-6, 3-1) will be the No. 2 seed in the Atlantic East postseason and will host Immaculata on Saturday in a semifinal game beginning at 1:00 PM. This is the first home playoff game for the Knights since 2018 when they defeated Cabrini 4-3 in overtime.
Caley Gee made four crucial saves in net for the win.
Notes: This is Neumann's first win over Immaculata since the 2018 season. The Knights have not defeated the Mighty Macs at home since 2014, 4-3 in double overtime. The three conference wins is the most since 2018, when Neumann went 3-2.
