ASTON, Pa. – This coming Saturday, the Neumann University Field Hockey will play in the Atlantic East Conference Finals against the defending champions from Marywood University.
Their overall record stands at 11-6 after defeating No.3 Immaculata last Saturday by a final score of 2-1. After a scoreless first, the Knights capitalized on a penalty corner by
Ayla Mergen.
Cadence Conti took the initial shot, and it was deflected into the goal by
Meghan Sheldrick for the 1-0 lead. Six minutes before halftime, the Mighty Macs tied the game but in the third, Sheldrick received a cross from
Natalie Hackett and swung it home for the game-winner.
Caley Gee had another strong performance in goal improving her goal against average to 1.85 with a save percentage of .674. She also has two shutouts. Conti leads the offense with 11 goals and two assists, including a program-tying record three penalty stroke goals.
Gabriella Cappelli has eight goals while Sheldrick's semifinal showing gave her seven on the year.
Jess Silver is Neumann's key passer with five assists.
The Knights will take on No. 1 Marywood University who has an overall record of 10-9 and a conference record of 4-0. In their lone regular season meeting, the Pacers defeated Neumann, 3-2 on October 18
th. The Knights picked up the game's first two goals as Conti and Cappelli struck, but Marywood scored twice in the third and once in the fourth to steal the game.
Neumann will look for their first conference title since 2008 as the game is set for a 1:00 PM start in Scranton, Pa. The winner of will also receive the Atlantic East Conference's automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
