ARLINGTON, Va. – The Neumann University women's basketball team held off Marymount University 49-46 on Tuesday evening in Atlantic East Conference action.
The win is the first for the Knights over the Saints while in the Atlantic East.
Emily DuPont led the team with 20 points.
Lindsay Holden added 10 points.
Jacqueline Wardrop tallied nine and
Aubrie Breisblatt added eight.
The Knights built a 12-5 lead during the first quarter. The Saints scored the final four points of the quarter for a 12-9 score at the first break. Neumann led by as many as six in the second quarter. Tied at 22 late in the quarter, Marymount hit a layup and the Knights a free throw for a 24-23 Saints lead at the half.
A jumper by Holden opened the second half, starting eight lead changes and four tied scores in the third quarter. The Saints scored the last basket of the quarter for a 38-36 lead heading in the final 10 minutes.
The teams stayed close in the fourth quarter and were knotted at 44 with 1:28 on the clock and the game came down to free throws. Holden went 3-for-4 to put the Knights up 47-44 with 19 seconds remaining. In the final 10 seconds, DuPont went 1-for-2 twice and the Saints hit two from the line. The key made free throws let Neumann come away with the 49-46 win.
Neumann (14-9, 5-4 Atlantic East) heads to Gwynedd Mercy on Friday evening for the final game of the regular season. Tip-off is slated for 6:00 PM.
