GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team dropped the season finale at Gwynedd Marcy 82-78 on Friday evening in Atlantic East Conference action.
Neumann, Marymount and Gwynedd Mercy all finish conference action 9-3. The Knights come out on top of the three-way tie breaker and will be the No. 1 seed in the postseason.
Donte Dupriest led the Knights with another double-double, 26 points and 15 rebounds.
TJ Lewis tallied 16 points.
DJ Earl scored 13 points and
Mike Smith, III added 12.
After starting the game back and forth, each team went on mini runs. The Griffins would build a 6-7 points lead before the Knights would pull back to within a couple, but could not get the key bucket. A three-pointer by Gwynedd Mercy gave it a 39-33 lead going into halftime.
Gwynedd Mercy kept Neumann at arm's length in the second half until the Knights pulled within two, 68-66, on a layup by Earl with 5:42 on the clock. The Griffins answered with the next five points. The teams traded baskets, and it was a three-point game, 77-74, with 1:27 left to play.
A three-pointer by Gwynedd Mercy made the lead six with just under a minute on the clock. Two Knights layups, one by Dupriest and one by
Jarell Keel, made it a two-point game with 20 seconds remaining. Two Griffin free throws sealed the 82-78 win
Neumann (18-7, 9-3 Atlantic East) will host a semifinal game on Wednesday evening against the winner of the 4/5 game between Centenary and Marywood.
