Baseball Falls in Ninth Inning

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team fell in a close 4-3 game to Alvernia University on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Josh Finger had three hits in the game for the Knights. Nick Colon started the game and went 6.0 innings. He allowed one unearned run on five hits and struck out three. Cam Leighton took the loss, allowing three runs, two earned, in 2.1 innings. Vic Mejia pitched 0.2 innings.
 
The Golden Wolves opened the scoring with an unearned run in the top of the second. In the fourth, Joe Boccio reached on an error and scored on a single by Finger to tie the game at one. Thomas Carroll singled in Andrew Brown for a 2-1 Knights lead.
 
Alvernia tied the game at two with a run in the top of the eighth. In the bottom of the eighth, Finger doubled and scored on a single by JerVal Shuler to take back the lead. Neumann loaded the bases with one out but could not add to the lead.
 
In the ninth, the first three Golden Wolves reached, including an RBI double to tie the game at three. Alvernia then hit an RBI triple to take the 4-3 advantage.
 
As Neumann tried to win in walk-off form, the Knights were sent down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Neumann (4-3) will host Vermont State University – Castleton on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 PM.
