ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Softball team earned their first win of the season as they split a doubleheader against FDU-Florham on Wednesday afternoon. They dropped the first game, 7-0 before grabbing the nightcap, 7-2.
Emily Ammon had a historic day as she went 3 for 6 over the two games, with two hit-by-pitches, five stolen bases, and two runs scored. With those five steals, she is now the career leader in Neumann program history.
FDU-Florham got on the board in the first inning of game one on an RBI sacrifice fly. They added two in the second with an RBI single and a run-scoring error. The Devils made it 4-0 in the third with an RBI single and put together a three-run frame in the sixth as a run came in on an error and a two-run single.
The Knights were able to manufacture runs in the second game, helping boost the offense. E. Ammon led off the first by getting hit by a pitch. She then stole second and third and scored on an RBI groundout by
Alexis Palombi for the early lead. FDU-Florham responded in the top of the second with a two-run single to take a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the inning,
Bri Reim reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a grounder.
Tori Spinella tied the game with an RBI single down the right field line. E. Ammon led off the third by, again, getting nailed by a pitch. She stole second and moved to third when
Erin O'Shea singled. O'Shea stole second and Palombi walked to load the bases. Three batters later, Reim walked to drive in a run and Palombi scored on an error for a 4-2 Neumann lead.
The bats on both sides fell silent until the sixth when Neumann broke the game open. E. Ammon, with one away, singled to left field. She immediately stole second and moved to third on a throwing error. O'Shea drove her home on a fielder's choice, reaching first safely. With the bases loaded and two away, Reim lifted a single into center field to drive in two more runs.
Olivia Ammon went all seven innings for the complete game, and her first win of the season. In seven innings, she gave up two runs on four hits and a hit-by-pitch while striking out two.
Neumann (1-15) will be back in action on Friday when they visit Montclair State University for a doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
