Women’s Lacrosse Drops Tight Battle against Wooster

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Women's Lacrosse team suffered a close loss against non-conference foe, the College of Wooster, on Friday afternoon by a final score of 17-16.

Lindsey Fagan led the Knights attack with five goals and one assist. Alena Catka was also key with three goals, two assists, and 11 draw controls. Krista Geibler added four goals, and Neve Murphy scored a goal with two assists. Abbey Fenton got the call in goal and made eight saves.

It took almost four minutes to start up the offense after some early turnovers as it was Wooster who struck first for a 1-0 lead. Over the next three minutes, Neumann was able to strike three times as it was Geibler, Fagan, and Catka giving the Knights the lead with 8:!2 left in the opening quarter. The Fighting Scots got back even with two quick goals but Fagan scored with a minute left and Neve Murphy swept one in at the buzzer for a 5-3 advantage after 15 minutes.

Early in the second, Fagan and Cassidy Starner extended the Neumann lead to four, with 9:09 left in the half. Wooster got those goals right back to make it a 7-5 game with 4:57 left. Both teams traded woman-up goals with Neumann's coming out of the stick of Geibler as they led 8-6 at the break.

Both teams scored five goals in the third but that doesn't mean that there wasn't any drama in the quarter. Geibler scored twice in the first 2:06, again giving the Knights a four-goal edge. They then traded goals, scoring nine second apart, with Catka getting the Neumann goal. With 8:18 left in the third, the Fighting Scots went on a four-goal push over the next three minutes, including two woman-up goals, tying the game at 11. Cionni Warrington and Fagan responded to regain the Knights lead heading into the fourth.

36 seconds into the final frame, Wooster got on the board and then Kenna Sanders and Catka notched goals for a three-goal lead. The Fighting Scots would score five of the next six goals with Fagan getting the Knights goal during that stretch. With 35 seconds left in regulation, Wooster popped home the game-winner to stun the Knights and grab the game.

Neumann (4-4) will have a short turnaround time as they'll ride on  to DeSales University on Saturday for a 12:00 PM non-conference match-up.
