Softball Sweeps Penn State Abington

ABINGTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team picked up a sweep at Penn State Abington on Saturday afternoon. The Knights won by scores of 8-7 in nine innings and 13-9.
 
Alexis Palombi went 3-for-4 in the first game and scored two runs. Emily Ammon and Marina Costello each added two hits.
 
Costello started the game in the circle and went 6.0 innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on nine hits and struck out nine. Sydney Wright picked up the win, going 3.0 innings and allowing three runs, one earned, on three hits.
 
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the third as Ammon tripled and scored on a single by Costello. The Nittany Lions answered right back in the home half of the third. Rylie Norris knocked in Palombi in the top of the fourth for a 2-1 Neumann lead. Penn State Abington tied the game at two in the fifth.
 
Neumann added two more runs in the sixth for a 4-2 lead. The Nittany Lions scored two in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.  
 
The teams traded runs in the eighth for a 5-5 game. In the top of the ninth. Ammon hit her second triple and Norris scored. Costello and Wright hit back-to-back doubles to add two more runs for an 8-5 lead. The Nittany Lions scored their ghost runner in the ninth and another runner on a wild pitch, but that was all they could get across the plate and the Knights came away with the 8-7 win.
 
In game two, Olivia Ammon started the game. Lauren Farrier picked up her first collegiate win, going 1.2 innings in relief. Ang Sannicandro got the save, going 3.0 scoreless inning and allowed just two hits.
 
Cioni Simmons finished the game with three hits and three runs scored. Seven Knights had two hits in the game. Tori Spinella and Faith Weaver each knocked in three runs.
 
Down 2-0 in the third, the Knights plated four runs. Neumann had three straight singles with one out. With two hits, the Knights hit a double and a triple for a 4-2 lead. Penn State Abington answered with four runs of its own in the home half of the third for a 6-4 score.
 
The Knights tied the game at six in the top of the fourth as Maddi Katuck and Spinella reached on back-to-back error where runs scored.
 
In the fifth, Neumann took advantage of a Nittany Lions miscue and scored five runs. Spinella hit a two-run single in the inning. The Knights added two more runs in the top of the seventh for the 13-9 final.
 
Neumann (3-17) heads to Swarthmore next Thursday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
