Baseball Falls in High-Scoring Affair

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – The Neumann University Baseball team dropped a 15-12 game on Tuesday afternoon against non-conference, Washington College.
 
Joe Boccio led with a homer and a double, hitting 3 for 4 with three runs batted in and three runs scored. Brandon Colon went 2 for 3 with two doubles, a walk, two RBI, and a run, and Josh Finger drove in three in his 1 for 3 day, adding a run scored.
 
Washington got off to a fast start as they put up four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Neumann responded in the top of the second when B. Colon drove in a run on an RBI double to center field. The Shoremen added to their lead in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run and a two-run double for a 7-1 lead.
 
The Knights didn't falter as they continued to pile up runs to get back in the game. In the top of the third, Josh Finger drove in two with a single and Boccio followed with a two-run blast over the left field wall for his first homer of the season getting Neumann within two. In the bottom of the inning, Washington responded with two runs and added three more in the fourth for a 12-5 lead.
 
After scoreless fifth, Neumann's offense exploded in the sixth as they sent 11 men to the plate. Thomas Elgrim doubled in a run, Chris Balshuweit hit an RBI single to right, Anthony Rakotz brought in a run on a fielder's choice, Thomas Carroll hit a sacrifice fly, Finger pushed in a run on a grounder, Boccio single in a run, and B. Colon hit an RBI for the seven-run frame, pulling the Knights even at 12. The Shoremen pulled ahead for good in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homer and an RBI single.
 
Neumann (9-5) will have a quick turnaround as they'll take on Muhlenberg College on Wednesday afternoon starting at 3:30 PM at Bruder Field.
