Softball Falls in DeSales Twin Bill

CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team were swept in a non-conference doubleheader against DeSales University on Thursday afternoon by scores of 11-0 and 11-4.

Alexis Palombi led the Knights, hitting 2 for 4 over the two games with a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. Bri Reim was 1 for 3 with two walks.

In the top of the first inning, Neumann had two runners on but could not convert. DeSales established themselves in the bottom of the frame as they put up seven runs in the first and on throwing error, two sacrifice flies, and four RBI singles. In the fourth, a three-run homer and an RBI single put the game away for the Bulldogs.

Game two started with another Neumann offensive threat, but this time they were able to get on the scoreboard. Emily Ammon led off with a line drive single to center. She immediately stole second and was moved to third on a Cioni Simmons sacrifice bunt. Palombi lifted a fly ball to right and E. Ammon beat the throw home to score the game's first run on the sacrifice fly.

DeSales was able to tie the game in the second on an RBI single. They then took the lead in the third on an RBI double and an RBI single. In the fifth, Nicole Anderson took a 2-1 pitch over the left field fence for her first collegiate home run, pulling the Knights within one. The Bulldogs regained the two-run lead in the bottom of the inning on a wild pitch, then added one more with an RBI double.

Palombi led off the sixth by smacking a base hit into center field. Marina Costello followed with a hard-hit grounder to third, but the throw to second got away and Palombi advanced to third. Ang Sannicandro then laid down a perfect bunt single, scoring Palombi and moving Costello to second. Anderson moved the runners up on a sacrifice bunt and Costello scored on a wild pitch to pull Neumann back within one, but the Bulldogs pulled away against in the bottom of the inning.

Neumann (5-21, 2-0 Atlantic East) will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Immaculata University in an Atlantic East Doubleheader starting at noon.
