IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team split an Atlantic East doubleheader at Immaculata University on Saturday. The Knights took the first game 6-4 before falling 10-2 in game two.
In game one,
Marina Costello stood out for the Knights, both at the plate and on the mound. Costello hit a home run and a double, contributing three RBIs and scoring three runs. In the circle, Costello pitched a complete game with five strikeouts and did not allow an earned run.
Nicole Anderson drove in two runs with a double.
Bri Reim added to the offensive efforts with an RBI double and drew a walk.
The Knights took an early lead in the first inning with Anderson's double to left center, driving in two runs scored by
Emily Ammon and Costello.
In the fifth inning, the Knights extended their lead as Costello doubled to bring in two runs. Reim also doubled to add another run, extending the lead to 5-1. The Mighty Macs managed to score an unearned run in their half of the inning, bringing the score to 5–2.
The seventh inning saw Costello hit a solo home run, increasing the Knights' lead to 6–2. The Mighty Macs made a final push in their last at-bat, scoring two unearned runs, but the Knights held on to secure a 6–4 victory.
In game two,
Cioni Simmons went 3-for-3 at the plate.
Alexis Palombi and Costello each added two hits.
Sydney Wright knocked in a pair of runs.
Olivia Ammon pitched 3.1 innings, allowing nine runs, just two earned, on nine hits.
Ang Sannicandro pitched one inning, giving up one earned run on five hits.
In the first inning, the Knights started strong with singles by E. Ammon, Simmons, and Palombi, loading the bases. However, the inning concluded without any runs. The Mighty Macs responded with a run, in the bottom half for a 1-0 score.
In the fifth inning, Simmons, Palombi, and Costello each singled, setting the stage for Wright, who drove in two runs with a single to right field. Despite this effort, Immaculata added one more run in the bottom half, concluding the game with a 10–2 victory for the Mighty Macs.
Neumann (6-22, 3-1 Atlantic East) will host Eastern on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.
