Baseball Falls Short in Atlantic East Championship

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Neumann University baseball team fell 13-2 to Marymount University on Saturday afternoon in the Atlantic East Championship game.
 
The Saints came out swinging and plated nine runs in the first inning. Their first run came as the Knights turned a double play. With two outs, 10 straight batters reached base and Marymount scored eight runs for the 9-0 advantage.
 
Marymount added three runs on a home run in the third and a single run in the fifth.
 
Neumann was not going to be left off the scoreboard. Donovan Brooks led off the sixth inning with a single and scored as Brandon Colon hit a home run to put the Knights on the board.
 
The Knights loaded the bases in the eighth inning but could not get a run across.
 
Neumann finished with eight hits in the game, two each by Brooks and Colon.
 
Vic Mejia started the game on the mound but could not net out of the first inning. Gatlin Hovenstine pitched the next 4.1 innings and struck out three. Brian Van Etten went 2.1 scoreless innings out of the pen and allowed one hit. Jack Valentine came in and struck out two to wrap up the campaign.
 
Neumann wraps up the season 27-13 and as the runner-up in the Atlantic East, the first time since 2015 the Knights finished as the conference runner-up.
