ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University Men's Soccer team used a 90
th minute goal by
Jordan Illian to secure a 2-1 season opening victory over Lycoming College on Friday evening.
The game started with the Knights on their heels over the very early going but they were the first to strike. Illian, playing the ball from his own side of the field, rocketed a clearing pass that landed at the feet of
Josh Moreland. He made moves around two defenders and rifled a shot past the Warriors goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
That scoreline held until the 81
st minute when Lycoming found a way to equalize. After a missed penalty kick and three straight corner kicks by the Knights, the Warriors countered the momentum and earned a free kick from 20 yards away, and took advantage of the opportunity.
Just when the game felt like it would end in a draw, Neumann intercepted a clearing attempt with under a minute to play.
Luke Mejia drove up the sideline and reversed a pass to the middle. As it reached the penalty spot, Illian ran onto it and placed it in the back on the net to secure the win.
Illian led with six total shots, three of them on goal. L. Mejia and Moreland had the other two shots on goal.
Carson Metzger made only one save but it was huge as he parried away a blast in the 55
th minute with a diving stop.
Neumann (1-0) returns to action on Saturday afternoon when they host Gettysburg College for a 5:00 pm start on the Turf Field.
