ASTON, Pa. — The Neumann University women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Washington College (Md.) 3-1 on Wednesday evening.
Bri Gautier led the Knights with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .348.
Melissa Eddy added 10 kills and 17 digs.
Kyla Sayson facilitated the offense with 19 assists while
Liv Bowers handed out 12 assists and tallied 14 digs.
Hannah Strohm finished with 10 digs.
Taylor Long notched three service aces.
Washington College jumped out early and scored the first six points of the match. Neumann chipped its way into the deficit and on kills by
Austin Raymer and Long, the Knights pulled to within one, 8-7. The Shorewomen answered with six of the next seven points to extend their lead back to six, 14-8. Washington College wrapped up the first set by scoring eight of nine points for the 25-13 set one win.
The second set started with the teams going back and forth. However, with the score knotted at 12, The Shorewomen scored seven of the next nine points to take a 19-13 advantage. The Knights tallied the next three points, but then the teams traded points until the end for the 25-21 set two final.
Neumann opened the third set with a determined push, highlighted by Long's series of three service aces that contributed to a 7-3 lead. Washington College responded with a scoring run of its own to tie the set at 9-9. Late in the set with the Knights leading 23-20, the Shorewomen scored four points to get to match point. An Eddy kill with the match tied at 27 gave Neumann the advantage. Eddy went back to the service line and the Knights came away with the 29-27 set three win on a Washington attack error.
Neumann began the fourth set with a strong start, taking an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by two kills from Gautier. However, Washington College responded with a dominant streak and scored 13 straight points for a 15-5 advantage. Despite late efforts from Eddy, who recorded several kills, the Shorewomen maintained their lead to secure the set 25-14.
Neumann (3-7) heads to Widener on Saturday for a tri-match with RIT. Action against the Pride gets underway at 11:00 AM, followed by Bengals at 1:00 PM.
