Strong Fourth Quarter Give Knights Win on Senior Day

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to defeat Gwynedd Mercy University 62-48 on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic East Conference action.
 
Prior to the game, the Knights recognized their seniors: Lindsay Holden and Taylor Hehnly, along with 5th year Emily DuPont. Holden scored 11 points in the game. Hehnly added three points. DuPont finished with 12 points (8-for-8 from the line), five blocks and six rebounds.
 
Jess Aponik led the Knights with 22 points and nine rebounds. Bri Gautier tallied a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points.
 
The Knights opened the game by scoring the first nine points, the first six by Aponik. Neumann held Gwynedd Mercy to just four points in the first quarter and held a 15-4 advantage after the first.
 
The story flipped in the second quarter as the Griffins scored the first nine points to pull within two, 15-13. With 3:23 on the clock, Gwynedd Mercy pulled even at 17 on a free throw. Aponik added six more points and the Griffins hit the final basket before half. Neumann took a 23-22 edge into the break.
 
Gwynedd Mercy came out of halftime and put up the first seven points. The Knights answered back as Holden hit two three-pointers and the teams were tied at 29. Each team had a 6-0 run before the end of the third and the teams remained knotted, 35-35, heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
After the Griffins opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer, the Knights went on a 12-0 run to open up a nine point advantage, 47-38. A jumper by Hehnly gave Neumann a double-digit lead with 3:01 left in regulation and the Knights cruised to the 62-48 win.
 
Neumann (8-15, 6-6 Atlantic East) heads to Marywood on Wednesday to start the last week of the regular season. Action is slated to get underway at 6:00 PM.
