Baseball Hangs on to Beat Alvernia

READING, Pa. – The Neumann University Baseball team defeated Alvernia University in a non-conference game on Wednesday afternoon by a final score of 4-3.

JerVal Shuler led the attack with a double, a walk, and three runs scored. Tyler Kilmer was 2 for 3 with a hit by pitch, a run batted in, and a run while Nick Ciesielka also had two hits. Michael Harless went 5.1 innings for the no-decision, allowed one run on five hits and three walks while fanning six. Josh Lillis gave up an unearned run on a hit and two walks over 2.1 innings. Rey Carrier earned the win in relief. He went 1.1 innings allowed an unearned run on a walk, a hit by pitch and a strikeout.

The offense started slowly as the first three innings went scoreless. Ciesielka led off the fourth with a base hit into right field. Two batters later, Shuler doubled to left-center, plating Ciesielka, but on an appeal, it was ruled that he missed third base, and the run was taken off the board. Shuler later scored on an error for a 1-0 Knights lead.

In the sixth, Shuler reached on a fielder's choice and on a failed pickoff and throwing error, was able to advance to third. Kilmer hit an RBI single to score Shuler, doubling their lead. Alvernia got a run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single to make it 2-1. They then tied the game in the eighth with a run scoring error.

Shuler walked to start off the top of the ninth and quickly moved to second when Kilmer singled. Yoan Feliz followed by laying down a bunt and the throw to first got away. That allowed both Shuler and Kilmer to score. The Golden Wolves pulled within one on a sacrifice fly, and had the winning run on base, put Neumann held tight to the win.

Neumann (5-2) will be back in action on Friday afternoon when they host John Jay College  for a 3:30 PM start.
