ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team opened Atlantic East Conference by taking a doubleheader from Immaculata University on Saturday afternoon. The Knights won by scores of 12-5 and 7-6.
The Mighty Macs opened the game by scoring an unearned run in the top of the first. The Knights took advantage of unearned runs in the bottom of the first and plated two for a 2-1 score after one inning. Immaculata scored one run in the top of the second to tie the game at two.
In the third,
Emily Ammon walked, stole second and third and scored on a double by
Ellie Zarnawski for a 3-2 Knights lead.
Neumann put together four runs on six hits in the fourth inning.
Nicole Anderson led off with a double.
Taylor Vaughn came in to pinch run and scored on an error after
Rylie Norris reached on a bunt base hit. With the bases loaded, Zarnawski singled in a run.
Marina Costello knocked in two with a double and Neumann held a 7-2 lead.
Immaculata scored three runs in the top of the sixth to pull within two, 7-5. Neumann answered with five runs in the bottom of the sixth as it batted around plus-one.
Kayla Naylor led off with a double, followed by a single by
Natalie Jairdullo.
Rebecca DiLeo singled to score Naylor. With the bases loaded,
Bella Morales hit a two-run double to score Jairdullo and DiLeo. Costello scored on a single by
Erin O'Shea. Morales scored on a single by Ammon.
DiLeo started in the circle and went 6.0 inning for the win, striking out four.
Lauren Farrier pitched the seventh inning.
In game two, the Knights jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the first. Ammon singled to lead off the inning and scored on a double by Zarnawski. Zarnawski scored on a sacrifice fly by
Faith Weaver.
Ammon led off the third with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Zarnawski for a 4-0 Neumann lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Zarnawski led off with a single and scored on a double by Costello. Costello came around to score on an RBI groundout by
Dakota Marshall.
Immaculata's bats came alive in the top of the sixth as it scored six runs on seven hits to take a 6-5 lead.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Zarnawski led off with a double. Costello then singled to score Zarnawski and tie the game at six. Anderson singled and Morales sacrificed both for second and third. Marshall loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.
Jairdullo singled to left center to score Costello and give the Knights a 7-6 walk-off win.
Costello started the game in the circle, going 5.2 innings and striking out eight.
Ang Sannicandro went 1.1 innings for the win.
Neumann (7-7, 2-0 Atlantic East) hosts Swarthmore for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 3:00 PM.
